During this most wonderous time of the year, most seem to get caught up in the activities and "spirit" of the Christmas Season. Yet, I often think that what we most often fail to do is to step aside and view what we have allowed Christmas to become versus what the real meaning of Christmas is. Several years ago, I remember that one of the "catch phrases" became "Jesus, the Reason for the Season". We should all take a moment to stop and consider the Spirit and Love expressed for us all that night over 2000 years ago. And remember "WISE MEN STILL SEEK HIM"! - dr.who?

the 1st Christmas

Almost two thousand years ago, when Caesar Augustus was ruler of Rome and ruled much of the known world, he ordered that a tax be collected from all of the adults under his rule. Each person had to go to the city of his birth and pay the tax in that city where his name was written on the tax lists.

At that time, in the city of Nazareth, there lived a carpenter named Joseph. When he heard the news of the tax, he was not pleased. It meant that he would have to make the long trip to Bethlehem where he had been born. He did not mind the trip for himself, but he was worried about his young wife, Mary. She would have to go with him, and she was going to have a baby very soon. Still they had no choice.

Joseph helped Mary onto their little donkey and they began their journey. He watched her carefully and stopped often so that she could rest.

As they traveled, they talked about the wonderful things that were happening in their lives. An angel had appeared and told Mary that she had been chosen to be the mother of God's Son. So Mary and Joseph made plans to care for this very special child. They would name Him Jesus, which means Savior, because the angel had said Jesus would save the world from sin.

Even though Mary grew tired, she was very happy. She could hardly wait for the baby to be born so that she could see his little face at last and hold him close in her arms.

When they came to Bethlehem, Joseph looked for a place to spend the night. But no one had room for them and it was rapidly getting dark. Meanwhile Joseph and Mary came to the last Inn in Bethlehem. "I wish I had a room for you." said the innkeeper sadly. He saw the weariness in Mary's eyes. "If it would be any help, you may use the stable. The hay there is fresh and clean, and your wife could at least lie down."

no room

Joseph thanked him and led Mary to the stable. It was a crude shelter, but it was warm. And Mary knew the baby would be born very soon.

Tenderly Joseph fashioned a bed of straw for Mary. And there amid the gentle animals the Son of God was born. Mary wept tears of joy and love as she held her little boy close to her heart. He was so beautiful and small. Joseph carefully wrapped the child in the clothes they had brought and laid him in a manger filled with fresh hay. Then he ran to get the inkeeper's wife and daughter to care for Mary.

In the countryside close by there were shepherds who lived in the fields. These shepherds took turns watching their flocks of sheep during the night.

Shepards in their fields

The angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds, and the golry of the Lord shone around them. The shepherds were very afraid, for they had never seen anything like this.

Tidings of Great Joy

Do not be afraid, the angel said. Listen, I bring you news of great joy. This is a joy that is to be shared by all the people. Today in the town of David a savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. And here is a sign to you that you have found Him: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

Suddenly with the angel there was a great number of the heavenly host, praising God and singing:

Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace to men who enjoy His favor.

Now when the angels had gone back into heaven, the shepherds said to each other, "Let us go to Bethlehem and see what has happened which the Lord has made known to us."

So they hurried away to Bethlehem. There in the stable they found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby lying in the manger, just as the angel had said.

When they saw the child the shepherds repeated what they had been told about him. Everyone who heard was astonished at what the shepherds had to say.

As for Mary, she treasured all of these things and kept them in her heart and thought of these wonders often.

Later the shepherds went back to their sheep. They continued to glorify and praise God for everything that they had heard and seen. Everything was exactly as they had been told by the angel.

Some time ago I lost my old GuestBook: I am absolutely clueless as to whut happened to it, but suddenly I could not make connection thru the established link. Since I could not find where they went I completely revamped a NEW GuestBook which I myself customized. I have also included a short (well, all right, maybe not so short) survey that I hope each of you will complete as you sign the GuestBook. If you have signed my GuestBook in the past, I would appreciate it if you would sign again since all those entries went whatever way the old GuestBook did, that I thimk on the matter, the old GuestBook was probably stolen by my nemesis The Master and is now lost in the fartherest reaches of the universe!!!
